The only thing in the rain guage through much of 2019 was dust, then later in the year ash from the bush fires.
The drought dragged on and then in October the fires started. By December they had raged down half the state of NSW. We hand fed for at least 6 months of the year hoping it might just rain. In December we evacuated twice.
The hard decision is what to do with the cattle when the humans get evacuated- we opened all the internal gates and herded the cattle into the largest most open paddock and then crossed our fingers.
All around us burnt, but somehow – with a mix of wind changes, good luck and a bit of good management the cattle remained safe and the farm survived.
